Diesel: Be Stupid

This post is definitely a creative thinking post but I can't wait for it to be scheduled till two weeks later.

I have to share this now, not two weeks later.


Great awesome stuff should be shared NOW, not later.

Diesel has come out with a new advertising campaign that has been said as among the most successful fashion advertising of the year.

Diesel: Be Stupid advertising campaign.


This campaign has sparked quite some interesting comments and attention. At least from what I see throughout the internet.

Designed by Anomaly London, this advertising campaign has taken quite a different approach compare to previous Diesel advertising campaigns.


Rather than the usual 'Be Smart' as what we normally would have tried to be or told to be, this campaign has taken 'Be Stupid' as its philosophy instead.


Like balloons, we are filled with hopes and dreams. But. Over time a single sentence creeps into our lives. Don’t be stupid. It’s the crusher of possibility. It’s the worlds greatest deflator. The world is full of smart people. Doing all kind of smart things… Thats smart.
Well, we’re with stupid. Stupid is the relentless pursuit of a regret free life. Smart may have the brains… but stupid has the balls. The smart might recognize things for how they are. The stupid see things for how they could be. Smart critiques. Stupid creates. The fact is if we didnt have stupid thoughts wed have no interesting thoughts at all. Smart may have the plans… but stupid has the stories.
Smart may have the authority but stupid has one hell of a hangover. Its not smart to take risks… Its stupid.
To be stupid is to be brave. The stupid isnt afraid to fail. The stupid know there are worse things than failure… like not even trying.
Smart had one good idea, and that idea was stupid. You can’t outsmart stupid. So don’t even try. Remember only stupid can be truly brilliant. ( Source from Diesel )

So it is supposed to be awesome.

I even found three sites that talk about how great and awesome this campaign is but... it seems like most readers didn't think so.


After going through all the posts stating how good this advertising campaign is, comes the comments of the readers where mostly stated that it is definitely a stupid campaign as how its name suggested it to me.

Stupid, literally.



IMO, I wouldn't deny that I don't understand about the campaign philosophy at first glance.

After looking at all the posters, I still don't quite get it... until I read about the description in the site itself.


Okay... maybe I am stupid.

But... is this too hard for the audience to interpret or is this a brilliant idea?


Or... just maybe this can only be understand by stupid people?

Not to say anyone is stupid. No offence.


Some say this is a turn off, some say this will lead to misunderstand while some other says advertising campaign should be of optimism instead.


No doubt, this advertising campaign succeed in making a statement but has this statement just gone too far?

How many audience can actually accept this thinking it's definitely a brilliant idea, not literally stupid.


I wouldn't mind the whole philosophy as it does make sense in a way or even awesome in its own way but is it relevant in this advertising campaign that could be said trying too hard to have a break through?


For me, I think this is an awesome idea. Very cool indeed.

But what say you?


Can you accept this statement that Diesel is trying to make?

Of course I do! Even the most brilliant minds ever existed tended to do stupid things too! But through those *stupid* acts they explore - they learn - and in the process creativity sparkles. Most of the time smart fellas don't even think or perhaps think too much when they are doing something - while stupid fellas just go ahead and make it happen. Thus, let's be stupid!

P.S Perhaps smart fellas are easily distracted too - while stupid fellas stick to a single task. Let's be stupid, my dear XP

lucian, i am stupid. =P haha. somehow i would say this is a very creative ads but the prob is not everyone has creative minds hence most ppl might not be able to understand or might be misunderstanding what the campaign philosophy is trying to say. just be straight forward, what they understand could be just stupid which is a very bad thing.

ahkian, hahaha!! that's what the campaign is trying to say. XD
